Hi!

Deirdre and I realized that we did not put the wedding time on the save the date (mainly because we hadn't decided yet). We will be having a 6:00pm service followed immediately by a cocktail hour then reception at Anthony's Cummoquid Inn.

The service will take place on the roof deck (weather willing) which is up ~ 20 steps. The reception will be in the main dining room and the cocktail hour will be split between the two venues.

Travel Reservations

Deirdre just completed an action-packed three days on Cape Cod with Tracy finding a florist, a photographer, a cake and many other wedding planning fun. George was there on Friday to help with the tasting and to meet with Rev. Gelfer. During that time we looked at a slew of nice places to stay. Most of them still have availability, but we encourage any out-of-towner to book soon. Especially if there is a group of people who would like to stay in the same location.

Incredible Beaches...Beaches Great for Kids

Cape Cod is wonderful in part because it has such a variety of beautiful beaches -- a type to suit every age and interest ---
Ocean surf with miles of beach and dunes, Cape Cod Bay with wide flats or sandy dunes, Nantucket Sound with warm waves and accessible beaches, Lewis Bay (and other sheltered bays with warm calm waters, quiet beaches, interesting shells and often opportunities to go out in small boats, and amazingly warm fresh water ponds. A day trip to the National Seashore can be unforgettable.

FRESH WATER PONDS: A favorite of the smallest children in our family is the numerous fresh water kettle ponds sprinkled across the inland areas of the Cape. Among the most inviting for tots is Dennis Pond which is actually quite near the Cummaquid Inn and shows up on the map link that shows the Inn's location. The small beach at Dennis Pond is reached by turning south off Route 6A at Summer Street in Yarmouthport. The water is warm and the sand is fine with the beach shelving very gradually so it is very safe and inviting for tots. Don't be discouraged by the "resident only parking" there. The signs only apply to the actual parking spaces. It is perfectly fine to park on the street a bit past the parking area.

Sandy Pond is off Buck Island Road in West Yarmouth and is also a warm clear pond but it drops of rapidly so the water gets deep fast. It is ok for little ones but is great for middle sized kids who like the adventure of swimming and sometimes going over their heads for a bit (but in a very safe environment). Our family loves to play water sports of all sorts there. We find that a 5 pm dip at Sandy Pond is often a great way to rinse off the salt from ocean adventures and it is a time when it is no longer crowded so we don't bother other folks with our antics.

Cape Cod is a vacation destination so there are plenty of places to stay including house rentals, bed and breakfasts, road-side motels and beach resorts. The wedding and related festivities will all be on Mid-Cape (near Hyannis), but feel free to venture out to other areas as the wedding may not be the only reason for your visit.

Wedding Location and Area Information

The Cummaquid Inn, where Deirdre and George are having their wedding, is in Yarmouth Port on Route 6a, on the north shore of Cape Cod. Map of Midcape, showing Cummaquid Inn

Although Rt. 6a, the Old King's Highway, is a lovely scenic road, it is just a short drive South across the Cape to the Hyannis area, which is the commercial hub of the mid-Cape. The Hyannis Map shows a bunch of local places to stay ranging from chain hotels to B&Bs. In addition, you will find shopping centers, restaurants, night life, ferry boats, the airport and hospital, as well as George's family summer place.

If you are hoping for a less hectic and perhaps more traditional Cape Cod experience, look to the East of Yarmouth Port. The Cape stretches out into the Atlantic through smaller towns and then turns North, where the wild expanse of the National seashore extends past Welfleet and on up to Truro and Provincetown. These are lovely vacation destinations, but are not all very convenient to Yarmouth Port.

A few miles to the East of Yarmouth on the Bay (North) side is Brewster, where the premier resort is the Ocean Edge, but there are a number of smaller places to stay along Rt. 6a as well. Once you get East of Brewster, it is a bit of a drive from Yarmouth Port.

And speaking of things being a bit of a drive, it is probably worth mentioning that Route 28, which runs along the South shore of the Cape, is often slow going, so be careful about committing yourself to long drives on this particular road.

Extra Ideas for Kids

Beyond the fantastic beaches that George's mom wrote about above, there are considerable options for young families. Some of the things posted on the Things to do post would work for the whole family, especially Four Seas Ice Cream, but here are some other things that are kid=tested, parent-approved.

Pirate Sailing Adventure : Kids get to wear pirate costumes and "search" for treasure all withing sight of the beach near George's family's house.

Miniature Golf at Pirate's Cove: This is one of the many mini-golf options of Route 28 that are open through the evening.

Activities: What to do when you are not actively celebrating the wedding.

Athletic: Running, Swimming, Bicycling, Golf, Beach. There is plenty to keep you busy.

Sightseeing: JFK Memorial, Hyannis Harbor Tours, Duck Boats

Exploring: Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Provincetown, Chatham

Ice Cream! (and other restaurants, if you must)

On your trip, not to be missed is Four Seas Ice Cream, in nearby Centerville. Four Seas has arguably the best Coconut and Black Raspberry flavors of ice cream in the world, not to mention George's favorite, Mocha Chip. We particularly like it because the owner only hirers local high school students with Honor Roll grades to staff the counter. There are no cash registers, so the "scoops" have to be quick with numbers.

Traveling to Cape Cod

Deirdre and George are getting married in the village of Yarmouthport, which is near Hyannis. Hyannis is accessible by land, sea, and air, with land being the most common and least expensive choice for most.

Air: Most people who fly to Cape Cod actually fly into Boston's Logan Airport and either drive or take a bus to Cape Cod. There is a small plane commuter service into Hyannis, but the costs are often prohibitive. Hyannis is less than 90 minutes for Boston's airport by car and there is a REALLY convenient bus service that picks up at the terminal and delivers one to Downtown Hyannis. There are also the usual Car Rental options.

Land: Hyannis is less than 90 minutes from Boston. Link to google maps to find your way.

Sea: This was a bit of a joke, unless you plan to spend time in Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard prior to the wedding. That said, both Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard are beautiful and shouIf that is that case, you can take a ferry from both of those islands into Hyannis.
